This magazine focuses on skin positivity and the importance of taking care of your skin. It also goes against society’s beauty standards because embraces natural beauty instead of covering up “imperfections”, and that’s why it’s called Heretic.
I took all of my own photography for this project and used my family and friends as subjects. I mainly used natural lighting forms imagery to give it more of a natural and somewhat dramatic feel with the contrasting shadows. I also photographed one of my skincare products to use as an ad.
I tried to get take photos of people who had different skin conditions and represent those who normally wouldn’t be represented in a skincare magazine by showing people of various ages and breaking the gender norms. The reason I chose to have a male on the cover is that in most cases it’s a woman that would be on the cover.
Some design elements include the semi transparent boxes with pull quotes that show various shades of skin tones, and the brand mark’s dot in the letter “i” would change its tone with each issue. For the section dividers I pulled the dot from the “i” and used that with muted tones as well, since this magazine is all about skin.
A challenge I had with this project was making sure that I had a diverse range of people to represent the the magazine and what they stand for. I think I solved that problem by using different age ranges and people who had different skin types like acne and mature skin.
